The foundation of
Harmony United Church was laid as early as 1870, when Christian
people established community church work in the "Harmony
Area", just east of the Oshawa limits. Records of that activity
are found only in the memories of long established families.
In 1924, a new
brick schoolhouse was built on Harmony Road S., and the community
retained the right to hold Sunday School meetings there. In 1931, a
Ladies Group was formed , called the Willing Workers. Twelve in
number, they were interested in a future church. They continued to
work to achieve their goal. |

Following the
annexation of the Harmony area with the City of Oshawa in 1951, the
present church property and a farmhouse were purchased as a church
site. The Community Christian Group became affiliated with The United
Church of Canada and in 1952, became a constituted church. The
farmhouse was renovated and worship services and related church
activities now had a permanent church home. In 1954, more property
east of their present property was purchased. In 1955, the Christian
Education Centre was built adjoining the farmhouse. The congregation
continued to grow and accept new challenges.
In 1964, the new
church sanctuary was built and the "old farmhouse" was a
demolished in 1977.
The congregation
of Harmony United Church still seeks to offer the opportunity to
share in Christian fellowship and wishes to present a challenge for
people to grow in faith and to share in Christian love and service. |
